Alta Leggibilità Editoriale con il metodo IAL
The Editorial Readability Workshop, developed from Dr. Rossella Santapaola’s research, explores the relationship between editorial design and accessibility through the IAL (Alta Leggibilità Editoriale, High Readability Index), a method based on ten typographic and design variables. As part of the workshop, I developed a new edition of Emilio Salgari’s Jolanda, la figlia del Corsaro Nero, applying high-readability principles to an adult-oriented book. The project combines accessible typography with a visual identity inspired by piracy, featuring illustrations influenced by Alberto Della Valle and custom glyphs replacing chapter numbers to create a visual system reminiscent of a treasure map.
The approach to reading a printed book is highly subjective and varies according to gestures, habits, contexts and, in some cases, dyslexia. For this reason, editorial design is increasingly called upon to engage with a broader concept of accessibility, without compromising the consistency of the work’s and publisher’s identity. The Editorial High Legibility Workshop using the IAL method is a practical extension of a research project that began with Rossella Santapaola’s master’s thesis (Dygraphic Design – Guida alla progettazione editoriale inclusiva per l’età adulta, Accademia di Belle Arti di Catania, A.A. 2020/2021) and continued through the PhD research Alta Leggibilità: nuovi paradigmi per la comunicazione museale inclusiva, developed in collaboration with the International Museum of Ceramics in Faenza. Students in the second year of the Master’s Degree in Communication Design (A.A. 2024–2025) designed a printed book for an adult audience by applying the IAL method, testing it on a larger scale to assess its applicability and refine its criteria. The IAL method is a self-assessment system based on 10 typographic and design variables, with an overall score ranging from 0 to 10: scores of 6 or above indicate good legibility, while scores of 8 or above indicate high legibility. The method was applied to Emilio Salgari’s novel Jolanda, la figlia del Corsaro Nero, reinterpreted to evoke the era of piracy. The project includes not only the book layout, but also original illustrations inspired by those of Alberto Della Valle, in which pirate-themed graphic elements replace Roman numerals, creating a visual puzzle that recalls the atmosphere of a treasure map.
